Photonic Sensors Roadmapping Workshop Report
Optoelectronics Industry Development Association, Aug 2007, Pages: 74
Examines application specific sensor needs for both the government and the private sector with an emphasis on the oil and gas market, sensing function integration, cost reduction opportunities, and barriers and competing technologies
The 2007 OIDA Photonic Sensors Workshop, held on June 7 in Ottawa, Canada, in conjunction with Photonics North, was planned to address: - Application specific sensor needs for both the government and the private sector with an emphasis on the oil and gas market - Sensing function integration - Cost reduction opportunities - Barriers and competing technologies
An additional objective of the workshop was to continue the work by the Photonic (Fiber Optic) Sensor Consortium relating to preliminary fiber optic sensor specifications, metrology, standards, and the potential to work cooperatively with other organizations working on sensor standards.
The workshop included presentations by industry experts representing sensing system designers, manufacturers, and end users of sensor technology. A poster session, in con-junction with formal presentations, allowed a broader representation of the technology and products to be presented. This report contains a synopsis of those presentations.
Applications for point and distributed sensors have been identified. Sensor integration and the potential for multi-functional systems were also discussed, as were wired (fibered) and wireless architectures.
A pre-workshop survey and a review of the previously-defined sensors roadmap were sent to attendees prior to the workshop for their comments and suggestions for updates. A synopsis of those comments presented at the workshop, as well as of the ensuing discussion, is given in Chapter 4 and a complete set of tables summarizing the revised and updated photonic sensors roadmap is provided in Chapter 5.
1.1 Goals The following were identified as the goals of the road mapping exercise: - Update the 2005 roadmap - Assure that the market segment projections are reasonable - Identify any market segments not covered - Assure that the characterization of the technology associated with the market segments is complete - Update the specifications for the various technologies as needed - The 2005 roadmap provided specifications for sensors that perform quantitative measurement; add specifications for sensors that function as alarms only - Improve the coverage of spectroscopy in the roadmap - Include mobile (wireless) sensor capability such as super motes - Update standards activity - Identify actions needed by the Photonic Sensor Consortium to promote and support standards - Identify technology/product support that is synergistic from related industries - Telecommunications components - Mote and other mobile network and identification technologies - Biomedical instrumentation
