World Report on Online Video
In-Stat/MDR, Aug 2008, Pages: 31
Online video is a wildly growing industry. We have analyzed the market, leveraging a recent consumer survey, along with several datasets to provide an in-depth discussion of the issues, and we analyzed the scenarios that will drive the business models forward.
Primarily, we provide a forecast for broadband penetration and growth in online video viewers. By 2012, for instance, the author forecasts that 90% of US households will have access to broadband, with 94% of these individuals watching online video—this is up from an estimated 77.8% of broadband users in 2008 watching online video.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Worldwide online video revenue is expected to eclipse US$ 4.5 billion by 2012. - By 2012, 39% of adults in the US are expected to have purchased or rented online video. - 42.8% of US respondents to this survey still favor physical discs with packaging when purchasing movies.
Broadband is perhaps the greatest predictor of online video growth and expansion. To this end, we used this forecast to show the development and maturation of the online video market, starting from a foundation based upon primary research. From our surveys it became abundantly clear that physical media is still highly supported, as over 54% of US respondents claimed to favor physical discs when purchasing content. This speaks to what would seem to be misguided speculation about online video supplanting physical media—in fact, we are years away, at least outside this forecast period, before this change will come to fruition.
What is now seen as a predominantly younger pastime will spread to encompass a wider group of people, in part due to the aging of current online video viewers, but also as a result of word of mouth, spread of services, growth of in-home networks, and support within the consumer electronic device markets. We have defined three principle markets:
- Purchased/rented videos - Ad-supported professional content - User-Generated Video (UGV)
The top group, purchased/rented videos is expected to offer the most robust growth in the near term; in large part due to an increase in subscription services.
By 2012, we anticipate the online video market to eclipse US$ 4.5 billion, growing from US$ 1.2 billion (CAGR of 39%) in 2007.
