While DSL and cable modem providers are enjoying a duopoly that will remain in tact for the next four years, the winds of change will soon be apparent for broadband providers. Wireless solutions for broadband will outpace the growth of wireline options beginning in 2009. The change will be both due to a maturity of wireline solutions and the growth of wireless technologies, such as 802.16/WiMAX.

Commercialization and cost reduction of various smart antenna technologies will allow operators to limit requirements for BWA wireless infrastructure, making deployments cheaper. While tower acquisition and construction remain key barriers to the BWA and 802.16 industries, mesh technologies, though unproven in a commercial setting, could also be used as a solution. The cross pollinating of fixed wireless systems with mobile IP-based solutions will also act as a catalyst for BWA and 802.16 growth. Major mobile carriers are poised to move to IP-based systems in the short-term and are looking at many of the BWA solutions.

Though WiMAX needs time to scale and resolve interoperability issues, it promises to bring economies of scale previously unavailable to the sector and is an option for existing holders of BWA spectrum seeking an evolution path to mobility. We project total WiMAX equipment sales are projected to reach $2.2 billion in 2009.

This report assesses the market for WiMAX based equipment and services in the sub 11 GHz bands. It addresses use of the technology for fixed and potential mobile
applications. It determines the current status of the WiMAX market and investigates requirements for a mass-market success. Competitors to WiMAX in both the fixed and mobile (4G) realms are assessed. Key vendors are discussed and as well as global developments by region. 802.16 chipset, base station and CPE revenues and volumes are quantified, and the report provides a detailed analysis of the BWA segment that is the primary application for WiMAX.
