The Global Trade in Television Formats, a new report, has found that the number of formatted shows broadcast during the past 3 years has risen by over a third. Broadcasters' prime-time slots are increasingly being filled with formatted programmes and this trend shows no signs of letting up.
As well as the commercial side, the report also examines the legal aspects of the format business, including:

- The pitfalls faced by creatives from idea to on-air and beyond
- Examination of key cases and Supreme Court rulings on copyright protection for formats in Europe
- The latest developments in European format protection on the grounds of copyright and unfair competition

Main findings from the report:

- The global format business was worth €2.4bn in 2004
- The number of format hours broadcast has increased by 22 percent since 2002
- The USA is the single most important format market in terms of production value, followed by Germany and France
- The UK is the biggest exporter of formats: 32 percent of all format hours broadcast originate in the UK
- Endemol dominates the format business. It is the largest originator, distributor and producer of formats in the world
- Games shows represent 50 percent of global format airtime
- Reality is the single most important genre in terms of production value
