Nanotechnologies for Wearable and Non-Wearable Textiles
Nanoposts.com, Nov 2006, Pages: 55
Nanomaterials with switchable and adaptive properties, new surface functions, self-repairing systems, and sensors based on fibres open a huge field for the development of new textiles constructions which will be integrated into leading-edge applications. They will be developed for the use in aerospace, automotive, construction, healthcare and sportswear industries. Underpinning nanomaterials for these markets include nanofibres, nanotubes, nanocapsules, and nanoparticles.
This report describes nanotechnologies, nanomaterials, nanotechnology companies, universities and research centres related to wearable and non-wearable textile applications. Nanotechnology presents a significant commercial opportunity for the textile industry, especially for health and medical applications. Desirable new functional properties include soil repellance, UV protection, anti-bacterialism, abrasion resistance and drug delivery.
Nanomaterials of interest for the textile industry include nanofibres by electrospinning (including carbon nanofibres), carbon nanotubes, colloidal solutions, nanomaterials by sol gel, controlleddelivery encapsulated nanosystems (nanocapsules with insect-repellents, perfumes, drugs, etc.), broad range of nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, sputtered metal coatings, cold plasma surface coatings, and monolayer coatings. All these areas will be outlined in detail in this report.
Markets for wearable textile include medical, consumer, protective and professional and military. For non-wearable textiles, the markets are medical (e.g. hospital bed sheets), large surface textiles (decoration, entertainment), security and automotive.
