Advanced Energy Storage Technologies (Technical Insights)
Frost & Sullivan, June 2004
With the rapid expansion of portable power equipment markets, there is a growing demand for economical energy storage solutions and intense R&D is being carried out to cater to this need. The increasing use of digital cameras and other small portable wireless appliances calls for thin film and button batteries while at the other end of the spectrum, 1300-ton battery modules are required for a growing grid stabilization market. The resulting push for advanced energy storage devices is driving new power back-up technologies. Despite high cost, lithium batteries are the most preferred in the portables market due to their energy-efficiency levels. One focus of ongoing R&D is toward reducing costs so that lithium technologies can also be used in back-up larger power markets.
