Medco Health Solutions (Medco Health) serves the prescription drug needs of more than 55 million Americans, about 7 million of whom are over age 65. Medco also serves more than 1 million consumers through Medicare prescription discount card programs. Medco Health’s programs and services help its clients moderate the cost and enhance the quality of the prescription drug benefits they offer to their members. Medco Health accomplishes this by PBM services through its own mail order pharmacies and its national networks of retail pharmacies. Medco Health, in 2005, administered approximately 540 million prescriptions; had net revenues in excess of $37 billion and net income of $602 million; and reported earnings before interest income/expense, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, of $1,350 million. In 2005, Medco Health’s mail order pharmacies dispensed 87.3 million prescriptions, significantly greater than the number of mail order prescriptions dispensed by the mail order operations of its next largest PBM competitor. In 2005, Medco Health processed approximately 19 million prescription orders through its member website, a 10% increase over 2004. Medco Health’s net income is driven by its ability to generate favorable discounts on generic prescription drugs dispensed in its mail order pharmacies, earn rebates and discounts on brand-name drugs; negotiate competitive client pricing including rebate sharing terms, administrative fees and price discounts; provide competitively-priced specialty pharmacy products and services; and provide services in a cost-efficient manner.
