Drinking Habits in the United Kingdom 2006
Mintel, Dec 2006
Perhaps the most obvious change in UK drinking habits has been the move to wine drinking and, within the wine sector, a trend away from “elitist” Old World wine towards “democratic” New World branded wine. Beyond this, all segments have seen evidence of consumer moves upmarket, towards premium lines, for which a high proportion of drinkers appear quite willing to pay premium prices.
This report examines the massive UK market for alcoholic drinks, focusing on changing drinking habits. Coverage includes beer, cider, wine, and spirits and liqueurs. The market is currently in slow decline in terms of both volume and real value, although nearly 8 billion litres of alcoholic drinks continue to be drunk annually and expenditure on alcohol represents 5% of UK consumer expenditure as a whole.
