For years, the author has investigated new, changeable markets. With the introduction of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) in January 2005, a new market of allowances for carbon dioxide emissions has emerged. After eleven months of existence of the EU ETS, the author examined the carbon market by surveying concerned installations in Germany. On the one hand, the study presents primary data gathered among participating German installation operators. Here, the companies’ attitude towards emissions trading, trading activities and specific strategies take center stage. Moreover, flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol and other means of emissions reduction come to the fore.

A distinction of companies according to their main business field reveals interesting differences that are pointed out in present report. Findings were presented to experts, by which means the results were validated. On the other hand, present report provides valuable background information that pinpoint the birth of Kyoto Protocol up to the commencing of the EU ETS and the emergence of the carbon market.

For the first time – after the EU ETS entered into effect – the survey provides deep insights into emissions trading in Germany from a practical point of view.
