Siemens Healthcare is one of the world’s largest suppliers to the healthcare industry. The company has long been renowned for its medical imaging systems, including X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), mammography, angiography, ultrasound and molecular imaging (MI) products, as well as related computer-based workstations, healthcare IT systems, oncology care products and hearing aids. Siemens is also an investor in Dräger Medical, a leading player in the market for electromedical systems, including patient monitoring products and electrophysiological measuring systems.

In recent years, Siemens has been expanding its medical portfolio through targeted acquisitions. By acquiring Shared Medical Systems (healthcare IT) in 2000, CTI Molecular Imaging in 2005, Diagnostic Products Corporation (DPC) and Bayer Diagnostics in 2006, and Dade Behring in 2007, Siemens effectively created the world’s first and fully-integrated diagnostics company, combining imaging diagnostics, laboratory diagnostics and clinical IT under one roof. As a result, Siemens Healthcare now delivers solutions across the entire continuum of care – from prevention and early detection, to diagnosis, therapy and care.

The acquisition strategy is paying dividends by doubling the overall market served by Siemens’ Healthcare sector to EUR57 billion and giving the group access to further attractive market segments. At the time of writing, Siemens’ Healthcare sector’s target margin range remained at 14 to 17%, despite the continued negative pressures wrought by the global economic recession.

The company employs more than 49,000 people worldwide and operates in 130 countries. In fiscal 2008 (year to 30th September 2008), Siemens Healthcare reported sales of EUR11.170 billion (14.4% of group consolidated revenues for the year) and profit of EUR1.225 billion.
