In 2007, the main framework of China national road network project called as “Five vertical and Seven horizontal” with a total length of 35,000 kilometers was basically completed. The total road mileage increased from 890,000 kilometers in 1978 to 3.5837 million kilometers at the end of 2007. The density of road network in China reached 37.33 kilometers per 100 square kilometers, a growth of nearly 3 times over that in 1978.

By the end of 2007, a total of 53,900 kilometers highway has been built in China. The total mileage of roads with different grades was 2.54 million kilometers, accounting for 70.7% of the total mileage of national roads (including roads without a grade), and with a road density of 26.4 kilometers per 100 square meters.

Moreover, The mileage of Grade 2 roads accounts for 67.3% of the total national road mileage, a growth of nearly 3 times over that in 1978. The total mileage of rural roads increased from 590,000 kilometers in 1978 to 3.1344 million kilometers at the end of 2007. By the end of 2007, the number of towns and villages are reachable by a road account for 98.96% and 88.24% of the total towns and villages in China respectively.

China saw a stable growth of road construction investment in 2007. A total investment value of RMB 648.991 billion was fulfilled, with a growth of RMB 25.886 billion or 4.2% over the year of 2006. However, the growth rate decreased by 9.4 points compared to the figure during 2005 to 2006.
