ratiopharm, founded in 1974, claims to be the leading generic company in Germany, and the third largest pharmaceutical company overall, in terms of prescriptions. In January 2009, ratiopharm’s founder died. The VEM Group, which owns ratiopharm, confirmed in early 2009 that the company would be put up for sale. This report provides an insight into the company, reviewing its current business structure and activities.

ratiopharm is a privately-held company owned by the Merckle Group, and based in Ulm, Germany. Founded in 1974, it now claims to be the leading generic company in Germany, and the third largest pharmaceutical company overall, in terms of prescriptions.

Sales in 2007 were 1,819 million euros, of which 819.4 million euros were in Germany, equal to around 45% of the total.

The company also has a major presence in other European countries, such as the UK and the Netherlands. ratiopharm has only a very limited presence in North America, although it has recently been expanding its Canadian operations.

ratiopharm has a generic biologic subsidiary named BioGeneriX. Founded in 2000, BioGeneriX has a number of alliances with potential biogeneric companies around the world. The most advanced project is for G-CSF, developed in collaboration with Neose.

In February 2008, the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) adopted positive opinions for two ratiopharm biosimilar medicinal products based on filgrastim.

In January 2009, ratiopharm’s founder died. The VEM Group, which owns ratiopharm, confirmed in early 2009 that the company would be put up for sale.
