This market contains static code analysis solutions ranging from Lint-based syntax parsers to standards’ compliance checkers to tools using more formal methods for verification. While many of the market participants address different testing needs through varying levels of analysis, these tools often compete for the same QA dollars. Given the legacy and location of many the static analysis tool vendors, the majority of commercial tool spend has thus far occurred within the Americas. Although VDC still expects that the Americas region will generate over 50% of market revenues in 2010, countries such as Japan and India within the Asia-Pacific will likely present larger long-term opportunities for revenue growth.
Driven by the safety- and security-critical nature of many project within this industry, the military/aerospace industry represented the largest vertical market for static analysis tools generating nearly a quarter of market revenues in 2007. In addition, the growing importance of software development coding and process standards, such as DO-178B and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), within this market will fuel further revenue growth going forward.
