Worldwide Fax Machine Report 2001
Davidson Consulting
The worldwide market for fax machines is down about 5% to 13.8 million machines, with 5.7 million or 42% coming from Asia, which is the one region which is not in decline. In contrast, the U.S. market is just 4.7 million or 34% of the whole. And Europe is yet smaller at 3.5 million units, or 23% of the market. Latin America is a tiny sliver in comparison, at 340,000 units or a mere 2.3% of the world market. Several of these continental markets were in decline in 2001. Europe declined by about 10% as it registered declines in every major country except Spain. The U.S. market suffered a 5% decline in unit shipments across the board. And the small Latin American market fell 13% as Argentina fell even further due to economic problems. Still, Asian countries declined by 5% or less. China going to the positive, it combined to engender a compound annual growth rate of 2.4% throughout Asia. In Asia, the laser and inkjet categories are projected to have Cagr rates of 17.6% and 12.3% overall. Brother was the big winner in the end with just about 2.8 million unit shipments. The company had the leading market share worldwide, ahead of Matsushita (Panasonic is its brand name, used in the US and Europe), which had 2.2 million. Brother exploited a line of low-cost lasers, ink-jets, thermal-transfer and even some thermals to take the prize. The company also tapped a boom in MFPs in 2001, which grew about 40% worldwide with Brother taking its share. Sharp was third with 1.5 million sold, followed by Hewlett-Packard with 1.3 million and Canon with 1.2 million shipments. The report includes 90 tables covering major countries and market shares by print type. At the end there are worldwide tables on multifunctionals, Internet fax machines, and 33.6 Kbs. models.
