Danaher Corporation designs, manufactures and markets medical, professional, industrial, commercial and consumer products and services, which are typically characterised by brand names in four business segments: Medical Technologies, Professional Instrumentation, Industrial Technologies and Tools & Components.
The Medical Technologies segment was established in 2004 through the acquisitions of Kaltenback & Voigt (KaVo), Gendex and Radiometer. Danaher has subsequently added to the medical technologies business through various acquisitions, most notably the purchases of Leica Microsystems in 2005, Sybron Dental Specialties in 2006 and Vision Systems in 2007. The Medical Technologies segment serves four main markets: dental, acute care, pathology and life sciences research. The segment’s other brands include Ormco, Kerr, Dexis, Imaging Sciences International and Pelton & Crane.
Danaher’s Professional Instrumentation segment encompasses two strategic lines of business: environmental (water quality and retail/commercial petroleum products) and test and measurement (test tools and calibration equipment, video test and monitoring products, network management solutions, network diagnostic equipment and related services).
The Industrial Technologies segment encompasses two strategic lines of business – product identification and motion, and aerospace and defence and sensors and controls.
The Tools & Components segment produces general purpose and specialty mechanics’ hand tools. Other products manufactured by the business in this segment include toolboxes and storage devices; diesel engine retarders; wheel service equipment; drill chucks and custom-designed fasteners and components.
This report focuses on Danaher’s Medical Technologies business segment, which generated sales of US$3,277 million in 2008, representing almost 26% of the group’s total revenue. According to Danaher, it is the leading supplier of dental equipment and acute care diagnostics products and the second-largest provider of dental consumables and life sciences solutions.
