This report was first initiated by Dr. Joe Webb's Strategies for Management in 2004. The present report provides completely updated demographics of establishments, revenues, employees, and capital expenditures, revised five-year-forecasts (out to 2013), and a new look at the trends and issues affecting the graphic design industry. Section 4 also takes an in-depth look at the current economic crisis and its potential impact on graphic communications.

Industry Background:

Graphic designers can be found in many businesses—and, thanks to the prevalence of desktop applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Adobe PageMaker1, and others, individuals can technically be considered “graphic designers” even if they would never put such a title on their resumes. The present report, however, focuses exclusively on those businesses that describe (and, more importantly, market) themselves as graphic design firms. WhatTheyThink has compiled many independent data sources, as well as its own proprietary forecasting methodologies, to provide this perspective on this essential business sector.

The foundation of this report originates with U.S. Census data for the industry described in the NAICS category 54143 (Graphic Design Services). Our analysts have found over the years that the Census data are a “good start” for examining graphic design firms and individuals, but can often be too blunt a tool to get at the finer nuances of what is happening in this highly dynamic industry. As a result, we have acquired quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of sources, and combined those with our own extensive experience in the industry to provide both a current snapshot, as well as a forecast of where the design industry will likely be in five years’ time. As you can glean from the title of this report, we also look back a
decade to get a “running start” on the current state of the industry. That is, where has it been and how did it get to where it is now—and where, then, will it be going? After all, a key element in forecasting the future is the ability to “predict the past.”

The present report highlights the economic trends and demographics of the U.S. graphic design industry, including the number of graphic design establishments, number of design employees, and freelance designers. We have also included revenue and capital expenditure estimates for both design businesses and freelancers, as well as other related data. We have also included an extensive look at the top issues and challenges for the industry—that is, what forces have driven, and will continue to drive, the evolution of the industry?
