Market Impact Assessment – Femtocells
Portio Research, Dec 2008, Pages: 35
Third generation cellular technology (3G) offers faster data transfer rates and makes it possible for operators to deliver advanced data services to their subscribers. However, the indoor coverage it provides is often inadequate because it uses high spectrum bands and the resulting radio frequency signals are attenuated by walls. Operators have been searching for solutions to improve indoor network coverage to increase the appeal of 3G networks and the consumption of mobile data services at home. It has been found that redressing these shortcomings through traditional macro base stations is not economically viable and that femtocells are a better alternative.
Femtocells, or ‘home base stations’ are small, low power 3G access points that provide strong mobile signals directly inside the home, when plugged into a residential DSL or cable broadband connection.
