With the drinks industry not always getting a good press, it really needs to make its case before governments and international organisations. As a result, effective lobbying is crucial for the drinks industry on the national and international political scale. Here just-drinks takes a look at how the drinks industry goes about its lobbying business and focuses on who takes its message to political power brokers around the world. It’s a tough job, but the rewards of an effective lobbying strategy can pay dividends many times over in terms of legislation that does not punish the sector and government policy that is realistic as well as effective.

While the drinks industry is undoubtedly an important sector in the global economy, the honest truth is that there are bigger players in town: the IT sector, steelmaking and food, to name a handful. So when drinks companies want to influence governments and international organisations to change regulations and laws in their favour, they sometimes have their work cut out to get a hearing. This is especially the case for the alcoholic drinks sector, because of the public health and disorder concerns associated with the industry. That’s where lobbyists come in: the specialist facilitators who can access decision makers and have the charm and persistence to make this access count. Who are these peddlers of influence? Well the drinks industry is well organised and its plethora of trade associations do a good job. But there are also professional lobbyists who represent a number of industries to powerful governments and international institutions.

They have to target many international, regional and national government officials, representatives and parliamentarians.

It’s a tough job, but the rewards of an effective lobbying strategy can pay dividends many times over in terms of legislation that does not punish the sector and government policy that is realistic as well as effective.
