EDGE upgrades will take place to varying degrees in all regions throughout 2004 and 2005. However, GSM operators’ equivocal orientation toward the timing and extent of
EDGE deployments has clouded visibility for silicon and handset vendors, delaying the development cycle for both parties. Consequently, EDGE networks will lack broad
terminal support initially.

Device availability usually lags network deployment. However, because of the prolonged lack of visibility for silicon and handset vendors into the timing and scale of EDGE network upgrades, GSM operators deploying EDGE face the prospect of limited terminal support for a period of time longer than occurred with GPRS overlay. EDGE deployments in North America are under way and will be essentially complete by the end of 2004. In a Class-8 or greater configuration, which most terminals will support,
EDGE achieves approximate parity with CDMA2000 1x data throughput speeds.

Unlike CDMA2000, however, EDGE is designed for data only; non-IP voice has yet to be standardized. Nonetheless, for North American GSM operators, uncertainty surrounding
the availability of WCDMA spectrum and the business case for WCDMA, coupled with the comparatively low cost to upgrade existing GSM infrastructure to EDGE, makes
EDGE the alternative for competing directly with CDMA2000 1x.
