Five key findings of this biometrics report:
- The biometrics market in Germany will experience enormous growth till 2009. The market size will increase from just about 12 million € (2004) to 377 million €.
- The federal government will be a major contributor to this development. By the year 2009, this segment will have a market share of 45%. This will be driven by the impending introduction of new passports and personal identification documents equipped with biometric characteristics, which is a measure that has been adopted in reaction to the threat of terrorism. The huge project planned for this purpose envisages the installation and integration of biometric systems at all registration ports and border transit points, as well as foreign missions.
- In particular, the biometric procedures of fingerprint and facial recognition can profit from the government project. Both together dominate all other biometric procedures, which together make up about 10% of the market.
- By 2009, the private sector will record a turnover of 208 million €, far greater than all other customer segments. The biggest share here is that of the transport sector, the financial sector and companies in the field of retail and services.
- Biometric applications for payments will not make any great progress by 2009. The turnovers achieved by payment applica-tions can increase tenfold by 2009, but will still have a negligibly small share of the total market. This will only change if and when banks also participate.
