2003 was a breakout year for mobile operating system vendor Symbian Software, which shipped 6.67 million operating systems worldwide—an 88 percent market share of advanced OS-based handset sales. Before 2003, the Symbian OS was resident on only five handset models—all but one from Nokia. At the end of 2003, the number of Symbianbased handsets remained modest, at 11 models from four vendors, with five more scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2004.

Although Nokia’s Series 60 platform continues to drive the majority of Symbian’s OS shipments, Symbian’s licensing campaign now extends well beyond Nokia into all Tier 1 and several smaller manufacturers. An operator technology integrator agreement with NTT DoCoMo in September has thus far produced three Fujitsu WCDMA handsets for use with DoCoMo’s FOMA service. DoCoMo’s adoption of Symbian as a standard (although not exclusive) platform for WCDMA and possibly HSDPA service delivery is a leading indicator
of the manner in which operators will leverage advanced mobile operating systems.

A profusion of new licensees have materialized in the last two quarters, including LG, Arima, and BenQ. This, plus imminent shipments of first and second-generation products from other licensees, provides medium-term security for Symbian. But numbers alone do not win the race, and competition looms from Microsoft and PalmSource, as well as emerging vendors such as MontaVista Software and SavaJe Technologies.

Finally, Nokia’s ownership stake in the Symbian joint venture, set to increase from 32.2 percent to 63.3 percent has the potential to derail follow-on device plans among non-Nokia licensees that perceive Symbian’s independence as compromised.
