In early days of biotechnology, excess manufacturing capacity put many contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) in a weak position. Many CMOs for example Verax Corp, Damon Biotech, Bioresponse Inc, failed in part because producers like Johnson and Johnson built their own facilities. However, in recent years many CMOs have generated positive returns. Recognition of the downside risk of capacity shortages has prompted many companies to sign up for capacity.

The worldwide market for protein manufacturing represents a substantial and growing portion of the value chain for pharmaceutical companies and presents an attractive opportunity for transgenic based manufacturers to expand their businesses. Most contract manufacturers are currently sold out or are approaching full capacity for their mammalian cell culture facilities. However, planned cell culture expansions are significant in scale as CMOs are upgrading their current capacity. In addition to the rapidly growing contract manufacturing market, in-house manufacturing is expected to continue to grow rapidly and contribute to a total protein manufacturing market of over $6.4 billion by 2005

Partnering and business trends in transgenic manufacturing is a thorough business intelligence analysis, which covers the latest business trends and market opportunities in biologics manufacturing. It contains valuable information about strategic alliance options and alliance networks available for transgenic manufacturers in the antibody arena. These options will provide attractive opportunities for transgenic based manufacturers to expand their businesses and create value for their shareholders. Vendors need to be able to approach customers with an understanding of industry dynamics, and how their solutions will address them.
