A critical component of a layered application defense is an application gateway in the path between the perimeter firewalls and application servers. Application gateways are finding significant traction securing business communications through mail servers, SSL VPN connectivity and Web applications. They also are being adopted for Web services, instant messaging and database storage, although these uses are still in their early phases. The technology uses knowledge of the application, protocol and messaging semantics to block requests that violate the application security policy.

The use of public protocols to access business applications drives corporate communications. In most cases, cryptography is used to extend private networks into public service provider networks. However, firewalls cannot inspect encrypted traffic and are not aware of the unique requirements of each application. Application gateways are used to apply strong security before the traffic is delivered to application systems. The application gateway logically terminates sessions at the boundary between the network and the application servers and databases. The most common deployments of application gateways provide inbound and outbound protection of messages from e-mail and IM messaging servers, SSL VPN access, HTML-based Web applications, and XML-based Web services.

In our evaluation of application gateways, we interviewed product vendors and enterprise security managers to identify the characteristics of leading security products. We specifically focused on whether products had the ability to prevent damage from attacks, scalability, manageability, performance, partnerships within the security industry and noteworthy customer successes.

The market for application gateway products and services is estimated to reach $880 million in 2004 and grow to $2.0 billion by 2009 at a compound annual growth rate of 14 percent.
