Despite the withdrawal of Vioxx (Rofecoxib) from the market in November 2004, considerable activity continues to be reported relating to the development of COX-2 inhibitors. Future priorities will be to demonstrate the safety of COX-2 inhibitors as a drug class; to better understand past problems and; to optimize future agents both with respect to traditional indications (inflammation/hyperalgesia) and the next wave of novel applications including Alzheimer's disease and chemoprevention.
