MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) and WIMS (wireless integrated microsystems) are laying the foundation for a new industry based on machines the size of a human hair.

We forecast that worldwide sales of MEMS/WIMS devices will be approaching $100 billion by 2009, and in the long-term (25 years), we see a potential in the trillions of dollars.

Several trends and factors are coming together to drive the MEMS/WIMS market.
- The technology is riding Moore's Law, but goes beyond. In addition to small size, the benefits of MEMS and WIMS mean increased speed, more functionality, higher performance, greater reliability, longer product lifetime, and enhanced energy efficiency.
- The development of MEMS and WIMS represents a major technological advance with enormous potential for the economy and for society.
- MEMS and WIMS will become as pervasive as semiconductors and as important to the economy, if not more so.
- The industry will have an impact on methods and tools, infrastructure, and standards. It also calls for a workforce educated and trained for the jobs created.
- The technology and market began in the United States, but other countries are making a concerted effort to establish R&D facilities, develop business enterprises, and penetrate the market. Although the U.S. market will grow rapidly, international markets will grow even faster and will eventually surpass the U.S. in shipments.
- As manufacturing problems are resolved, more products will enter the marketplace and penetrate new sectors. Many products are unique and are entering the market without competition. However, success will attract others, and new products will be developed.
- MEMS and WIMS technologies are seen as a means to drive economic growth and create employment. Major government research programs have as an important object technology transfer, so that research results can be turned into useful products and put on the market.

Scope
The primary focus is on the U.S. market, within the context of the global market. The forecast covers the years 2004-2009. In addition, a quantitative model indicates the long-term potential.
The main body of the report begins with Chapter II, Technology Development. It defines the technology, briefly traces the development of the industry and its importance. The major components of MEMS/WIMS systems are identified, as well as issues in design, manufacturing, packaging, and standards, and provides examples of innovations that are resolving these issues. Major government-sponsored research programs are covered, as well as corporate R&D. The activities of various entities are profiled to provide insight into the innovations that are occurring.
Chapter III, Industry Framework, looks at at ways that new companies are being established through spinoffs from university programs and being funded by venture capital, government contracts, and corporate support. The discussion also covers the importance of patents and licensing. An examination of activities around the world shows how the foundation is being laid for a high potential around the world, as well as a vigorously competitive market.
Chapter IV, Applications, identifies major market sectors, including healthcare, transportation, electronics, environmental monitoring, energy, defense/security, and space. The discussion looks at the types of products currently in use or being developed for various applications and customers, and some of the major companies involved.
Chapter V, Product Developers, identifies and profiles dozens of major companies developing and marketing MEMS/WIMS devices, and provides information about their outlook, strategies, and market position where available.
Chapter VI, Analysis and Forecast, develops a quantitative model to estimate the long-term potential of the MEMS/WIMS market, as well as a medium-term forecast. For the long-term, we look at a 25-year period, and the medium-term forecast covers the period 2005-2009, with a breakdown by major market segments. This model uses top-down analysis based on macro indicators, rather than bottom-up based on counting units
Finally, the report contains a bibliography and a glossary, an appendix containing some information about multi-agency environmental monitoring programs that make use of or could make use of MEMS/WIMS, and a directory of companies covered in the report.
