The 'Big Three' Is Becoming the 'Big Four'

Data over the last two years from comScore Media Metrix, which measures unique Internet visitors from home, work and university locations, indicates Yahoo! took over from MSN-Microsoft sites to become the most popular US Internet destination in 2004. AOL Time Warner sites ranked second. The audience to Google sites grew at twice the rate of the leading portals but attracted only 60% of the audience of Yahoo! in September 2004.

Web sites whose audience grew significantly in 2004 included the search engine Ask Jeeves, the anti-virus software provider Symantec and the Weather Channel. The Web sites that fell out of the top 10 in 2004 were Terra Lycos (ranking 6th in 2003 and 12th in 2004), the Gator Network and the Excite Network.

Alternative data from Nielsen//NetRatings measuring the top US Internet brands (as opposed to parent companies) in November 2004, confirms that Yahoo! is the leading US Web site, followed by MSN, Microsoft, AOL and Google.

While there has been some criticism leveled at the accuracy and veracity of the audience measurement services of both comScore and Nielsen//NetRatings, the two separate data sets correspond closely when it comes to the audience measurement of the top five sites. Data from both firms confirms that the gap between the top three portals and Google has closed over the last 12 months.

While Yahoo! is the leading portal in the US, it fares less well in Europe according to Nielsen//NetRatings. MSN, Google and Microsoft were the leading online brands in terms of audience reach in Europe in April 2004, with Yahoo! coming in 5th behind eBay. AOL did not make the top 10.
