This industry comprises: (1) establishments primarily responsible for the entire construction (i.e., new work, reconstruction, or repairs) of heavy industrial non-building structures, such as chemical complexes or facilities, cement plants, petroleum refineries, industrial incinerators, ovens, kilns, power plants (except hydroelectric plants), and nuclear reactor containment structures; (2) establishments identified as industrial non-building construction management firms; and (3) establishments identified as special trade contractors engaged in activities primarily related to industrial non-building construction. Establishments in this industry may subcontract some or all of the actual construction work. Kinds of establishments include industrial non-building general contractors, design builders, engineer-constructors, and joint-venture contractors. This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.

Introduction

Constructing on subdued growth

Supplying a range of design, construction, repair and maintenance services to the electricity generation, petroleum refining and heavy manufacturing industries, this mature industry is building on its existing share of revenue from construction work done outside the US with industry export earnings. Despite the prevalence of many small scale participants, this heavily regulated industry is considered to be less fragmented than most in the construction sector, partly thanks to its technical complexity.
