The outlook for automotive LPG is very positive: growth in global demand is forecast to average 5.9% per annum between 1999 and 2009. Government backing and support is regarded as a fundamental cornerstone towards the successful introduction, development and continued existence of autogas markets across the globe. Without government support, even with favorable market characteristics, an autogas market could not develop. The government holds the key to many of the issues regarding the autogas market of today. Although most of the world's countries profess an understanding of environmental concerns, the real driver behind the use of autogas is its price advantage over the other fuels. Although price is a crucial factor in stimulating demand, events in France, for example, have indicated that the autogas consumer is one, which is difficult to convince, and one that can be easily deterred from using autogas when compared to gasoline. ‘Global Automotive LPG’ examines how governments have influenced the autogas markets at the various stages of development and identifies the non-price factors that are affecting the take up of autogas.
