Beyond the perimeter firewall
Datamonitor, Feb 2003, Pages: 25
Introduction: As the enterprise perimeter firewall market nears saturation, firewall vendors must look to new potential applications and extend the lifecycle of their products, bringing the benefits of firewall protection to new areas of the network and those other than the large enterprises. A number of sub-markets exist within the overall firewall sector and vendors must not only identify them but also see how fast they are growing, how important they are likely to be and how they can be best exploited.
Scope: * On the surface, the firewall market is still growing strongly with many vendors experiencing impressive growth
* The reality is, however, that recently many new sales have been for VPN solutions with the firewall solution included as part of the total package
* This brief looks at where in the IT system a firewall solution can be deployed and details where the greatest growth in revenues will be found
* It also recommends strategies for exploiting these sub-markets to ensure that firewall penetration extends beyond the perimeter
Report Highlights: One of the key problems that many smaller clients have with firewall solutions is the difficulty in configuring and installing them. Many of these customers cannot afford staff with the ability to effectively do so internally. At the same time they are reticent to spend the extra IT dollars on external services. They therefore choose to configure and install the solutions internally even if they are not technically skilled enough to do so effectively.
To counter-act these problems, a number of network equipment vendors and pure-play security vendors have launched dedicated security appliances for SMEs or branch offices. Initially these solutions offered firewall and VPN functionality but increasingly they run a number of solutions from a single device, offering features such as traffic management capabilities, anti-virus, content filtering, intrusion detection, vulnerability assessment and even PKI.
As broadband penetration grows, risks to SMEs will increase. Switch-based firewall products will remain attractive because they can consolidate security and networking features. Overall the future for SME firewall solutions looks rosy, as many solutions now fall within the price range of smaller, price-sensitive customers. Datamonitor believes that the traditional network equipment vendors (NEVs) such as Cisco, Nortel and 3Com will continue to benefit from their strong mind-share.
