In early 2002, CIR released a study of the optical switching sub-systems and components market. The conclusion of the report was that while this segment of the market was now living in a world of reduced expectations CIR did, however, see opportunities in this space for companies who had adopted more realistic expectations and business models. As we look to 2003 we continue to see opportunities for companies who are aligned with the direction of the market.

In this new report we have provided a greater focus on technological and competitive issues that reflect the reality of carrier spending plans and systems manufacturer strategies. The report discusses the implications for the electronic switching device market after the apparent collapse in the OEO switching market, whether or not the all-optical product manufacturers can expect any opportunities outside the US and which companies are demonstrating real competitive advantages in the marketplace and how are they doing it. The report also looks at the economics of switch-based Oadms compared with other technologies, the market implications of the latest developments in Mems/PLC integration and Mems reliability, the opportunities for Plc-based switches and the remaining opportunities for opto-mechanical switching devices.

CIR quantifies those opportunities with its latest 2003-2006 worldwide forecast based on our mathematical model of the optical switching market. Both equipment and component/subsystems projections are included within the report and the technologies covered comprise OEO, optomechanical, Mems, liquid crystal, and “solid state”/waveguide based switches. The main application segments forecast are long-haul OXCs, metro OXCs, Roadms and protection/restoration.

Our estimates of expenditures on optical switching are based on CIR’s deep understanding of customer buying patterns, guided by an ongoing interview program with service providers, equipment vendors and subsystems/components manufacturers. By tracing the demand from the needs of the service providers through to the expected demand for the optical switching chips, this report paints a realistic picture of where money is and isn’t being spent in the optical switching market.

Worldwide Forecasts Include:

Markets for OXCs ($ millions)
Markets for Switch-based Roadm Systems, 2003 to 2006
Electronic-Switching Components and Subsystems for OEO Environments, 2003 to 2006 ($ millions)
Value of Market for OEO Cross-Connect Systems, 2003 and 2006 ($ millions)
Value of Market for All-Optical Cross-Connect Systems, 2003 to 2006 ($ millions)

Expenditures by Equipment Vendors for:

- Electronic-Switching Components and Subsystems for OEO Applications, 2003 to 2006 ($ millions)
- Mems Switching Subsystems ($ millions)
- Mems Switching Chips, 2003 to 2006 ($ millions)
- 2D Mems Switching Subsystems, 2003 to 2006 ($ millions)

Expenditures for:

- Optomechanical-Switching Subsystems by Equipment Vendors for Protection-Switching Applications ($ millions)
