Compared to the days of “optical fever,' the optical switching business is living in a world of reduced expectations. Several companies have either retreated from, or outright abandoned, the market. CIR does however, see opportunities in this space for those remaining companies who have adopted more realistic expectations and business models. In this report, CIR quantifies those opportunities with its latest five-year worldwide forecast based on our mathematical model of the optical switching market. Both equipment and component/subsystems projections are included within the report and the technologies covered comprise OEO, opto-mechanical, 2D Mems, 3D Mems, liquid crystal, and “solid state”/waveguide based switches. The main application segments forecast are long-haul OXCs, metro OXCs, Roadms and protection/restoration.

Our estimates of expenditures on optical switching are based on CIR’s deep understanding of customer buying patterns, guided by an ongoing interview program with service providers, equipment vendors and subsystems/components manufacturers. By tracing the demand from the needs of the service providers through to the expected demand for the optical switching chips, this report paints a realistic picture of where money is and isn’t being spent in the optical switching market.
