Psoriasis - Biologics Impact Treatment Regimes Across The Globe
Datamonitor, Feb 2005, Pages: 203
Psoriasis is a non-life threatening but highly debilitating disease that currently has no cure. Traditional treatments often lack efficacy or are effective but have very poor side-effect profiles, limiting use in severe disease cases only. However, the market is growing as disease awareness increases through the approval and marketing of novel biologic treatments in this indication.
Epidemiology studies from across seven markets are applied to population data resulting in an estimated psoriasis population of over 18m, but low diagnosis rates indicate a large population of untreated sufferers. Physicians' perceptions of the influence of key product attributes on their prescribing of psoriasis drugs are assessed, showing that efficacy and side-effect severity are universally important. However, class variation in the importance of attributes such as formulary/reimbursement status and maintenance of remission highlight detailing target areas for specific products.
This report provides you with:
- An overview of Psoriasis disease, including detailed epidemiology, physician estimated diagnosis rates and severity split - A breakdown of treatment trends in the following markets: US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and UK - Survey of PCPs and dermatologists in the major markets to capture the treatment of the ranging severities of psoriasis, from mild to severe patients - Review of current treatment options and clinical debate including comments from key opinion leaders
Key findings and highlights
- Psoriasis is currently under diagnosed, with an average of 55% of sufferers diagnosed by a physician. However, awareness of the debilitating nature of this disease is increasing, driven by the introduction of high profile biologic brands into the market. - Topical treatments such as calcipotriol and corticosteroids still dominate psoriasis treatment, leaving a gap for the moderate severity patient not effectively treated by this group, but not severe enough for an expensive or toxic systemic treatment. - Current and pipeline biologic brands are differentiated from selected traditional brands by their perceived superior efficacy, side-effect profile, dosing frequency and ability to treat comorbidities.
Reasons to buy
- Differentiate your product in the crowded psoriasis market through an understanding of physician perceptions of key product brands - Identify unmet needs and the most important attributes to prescribing physicians for steroidal, biologic and vitamin derivative treatment classes - Forecast product usage across the seven major markets based on estimated treatment class patient numbers
'...I think that the biologic companies in general have done an extremely effective marketing job, and other pharmaceutical companies could learn from seeing what they did… they've done great PR work...' - US Opinion Leader
'...Biologics will grow the market because when these companies are advertising psoriasis, a lot of the people with mild disease will come to the office and they will learn that biologics are not for them and will get put on a topical. The topicals will grow because of biologics...' - US Opinion Leader
