This report takes a deep dive look into the healthcare vertical differences and similarities in the SMB vs. Enterprise healthcare IT trends and expenditures. SMB includes the small and medium healthcare businesses, or those healthcare organizations with under 1000 employees. Enterprise includes those healthcare organizations with over 1000 employees. IT segments include applications, computer hardware, network hardware, telecom services & equipment, IT personnel, and outsourcing/hosted services.

When evaluating the small versus large healthcare organizations in the U.S., there are quite a few differences and even some similarities. The small and medium healthcare organizations are expected to see slightly greater increases in spending on IT than the larger healthcare organizations. In 2004, the SMB healthcare end-users spent $21 billion on IT services and equipment, while the enterprise healthcare end-users spent an estimated $27 billion. This equates to an estimated $6 billion difference in spending. By 2008, this gap is expected to decrease by $1 billion, where the SMB healthcare market will spend roughly $27 billion on IT services and equipment.
