The Global Market for Organic Food and Drink
Organic Monitor, July 2003, Pages: 135
North America Fuelling Global Market Expansion Global sales of organic food and drink increased by 10.1 percent to USD 23 billion* in 2002. Much of the growth is being observed in North America where the US market is expanding at a fast rate. The implementation of the National Organic Programme (NOP) has raised the profile of organic products, which have become more visible in mainstream retailers. American consumers are increasingly demanding natural and healthy products and this is stimulating organic food sales. The organic fresh fruit and vegetables sector accounts for most sales in the American organic food industry. Europe initially had the largest market for organic food and drink however it has been overtaken by North America. Market growth slowed to 7.8 percent in 2002. The German market was hit by the Nitrofen food scandal and growth rates in countries like the UK are slowing. Organic food sales continue to rise at a healthy rate in countries like Italy and Switzerland. Slowing growth rates are causing the organic meat and dairy sectors to suffer from overcapacity in some countries. Organic food production is stepping up in the four corners of the globe. There are almost 23 million hectares of organic farmland and this is concentrated in three geographic regions. Much of the increase in organic food production is occurring in third world countries where farmers are being attracted to the export benefits of organic food production. The study recommends that such countries take a cautionary approach to organic food production for the potential of export markets is often overstated. Market growth rates are slowing and supply-demand imbalances are to become a permanent feature of the global organic food industry. The report projects growth in the global organic food industry to continue however at slower rates. Demand for organic foods is expected to no longer be confined to the western world as more regional markets develop. Convergence of consumer demand and the formation of trading blocs are factors that are to drive market growth in the coming years. This report highlights the business opportunities in the global organic food and drink market. Recommendations are given for key product categories and geographic regions. Detailed analysis for the major regions include: - Market size and revenue forecasts, 2002-2009 - Revenue breakdown by major product categories - Details of leading organic food producers and retailers - Market drivers and restraints - Major industry challenges - Organic farmland and organic food production - Organic standards and certification - Key country market reports - Consumer behaviour patterns * Global market size is lower than initially estimated due to changes in organic food definitions in countries like Japan, and more accurate information becoming available.
