4Q 2004 WLAN Market Share Report
In-Stat/MDR, Feb 2005, Pages: 25
In 4Q04, worldwide Wi-Fi revenue increased by 17% Year over Year (YoY), up from $565 million in 4Q03. Revenue for multimode products alone grew by 54%. Multimode products are capable of operating at 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
Although 802.11b shipments are rapidly declining, shipments for 802.11g and multimode products both increased in 4Q 2004. The fastest growing segment was multimode access products, which increased by 52%.
Additionally, products that embed WLAN in broadband equipment are quickly starting to outpace SOHO WLAN products.
Although ratification of the 802.11n IEEE WLAN specification isn't expected until late 2006, vendors have started to offer enhanced products using a combination of proprietary technologies. In December, Belkin began offering 'pre-N' routers and adapters. Leading vendors, including Linksys, Netgear and D-Link, have announced Multiple-Input/Multiple-Output (MIMO)-based products. MIMO is a technique for boosting wireless bandwidth and range, which will enable better performance for applications such as multimedia and entertainment content.
