The US Market

In the US, terrestrial cable and DSL services will dominate the broadband market for the foreseeable future, although as relatively mature technologies, they will grow far more slowly than some of the newer access modes, like 3G wireless, Fiber to the Home (FTTH), satellite and fixed wireless.

In spite of high growth rates, the total number of subscribers on mobile broadband technologies will remain small through the end of the decade. Consequently, the majority of access revenues will continue to accrue to DSL and cable operators, according to Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and Wilkofsky Gruen Associates projections. That said, the ramp-up in spending on WiMaX infrastructure will be steep, growing at a CAGR of 110% over the next four years. This comprises customer premises equipment (CPE), backhaul (the transmission of data to a network backbone) and point-to-multipoint equipment used for broadband access. Equipment costs for Wi-Fi continue to fall, facilitating uptake by consumers and businesses of all sizes looking to implement WLAN capabilities.
