Trends in Business Usage of VoIP

According to comparative survey data aggregated by eMarketer, between 10% and 25% of businesses had begun using VoIP as of early 2005, up from approximately 2% to 3% of all businesses that were users in 2003.

In September 2004, research firm IDATE released its forecast of worldwide enterprise VoIP use, estimating that 40% of businesses would be using VoIP services by 2009, up from 2.5% of enterprises in 2003. In terms of the number of individual VoIP telephone lines in use, IDATE estimates that this total will climb from about 10 million business lines in 2003 to 180 million lines by 2009.

Businesses in the United States are slightly ahead of their counterparts in Japan, according to IDATE, with roughly 25% to 30% of American firms using VoIP as of early 2004, compared to 23% of large enterprises in Japan. In Europe, business adoption of VoIP was between 15% and 20% at the beginning of 2004, although IDATE expects it to accelerate in 2005 as businesses in the UK and other parts of northern Europe begin using VoIP during the course of this year.

IDATE found that larger enterprises were typically deploying VoIP lines faster than their small and medium size counterparts, although small businesses are rapidly catching up.

Another survey, by In-Stat/MDR, found that at the end of 2004, 12% of US businesses were using VoIP, up from 3% of US companies in 2003. Similar to IDATE's findings, In-Stat/MDR noted that larger companies were more likely to be using VoIP than smaller firms.

By the end of 2005 In-Stat/MDR predicts that 43% of large enterprises and 34% of middle market firms will be using VoIP in some capacity, while overall, nearly 20% of US businesses will be adopting VoIP this year.

For its part, Harris Interactive found in its most recent study that 12% of the US-based businesses it surveyed were using VoIP as of January 2005.
