The Fifth Edition of this in-depth analysis of Power Packs for portable electronics details the effects of the economic recovery on this important market. The detailed analysis quantifies how much the market has shrunk from its peak, and projects the trajectory of the continuing recovery.

This report provides geographic forecasts for Asia, Central & Latin America, Europe, and North America. In addition, Chemistry forecasts, forecasts by Application, forecasts by Pack Architecture, and a comprehensive analysis of the leading competitors are included along with a market share analysis. Forecasts are provided in Units, Dollars and Average Selling Price Trends.

This report details the threats and opportunities presented by emerging technologies such as Micro Fuel Cells. Legal and Environmental issues and Battery Recycling are also reviewed and discussed.

The global economic slowdown that had flattened growth rates a few years ago has passed. But its results linger. The degree and duration of the slowdown varied by application segment and by geographic region. As a result, market shares have shifted between Application Segments and between Geographic Regions. Some of these market share shifts may be temporary; others may persist. Business model changes at both the application and the battery level provide both opportunities and threats for makers of power packs and associated components.

Several factors are driving the power packs market for portable electronics. New notebook and wireless standards, the continued emergence of mobile phones as a converged device, the move notebook computers have made in the overall personal computer (PC) space and slower-than-expected market penetration by tablet PCs impact both the power requirements and demand for portable electronics and the associated battery packs. On the technology side, several applications have stayed true to trend by offering additional features that require more power. However, meeting the power needs for these new features has not necessarily resulted in larger battery packs. It has been accommodated largely by improvements in power management. Finally, there is the impending presence of micro fuel cells, which to date have not entered the market, but continue to lurk on the outside waiting for their technology to come to fruition and find the niche that allows initial market penetration.

Topics Covered include:

- Battery Pack Economic Factors, Market Drivers and Technological Trends

- Worldwide Market Forecasts (Units, Dollars and Pricing Trends)

- North America Market Forecasts (Units, Dollars and Pricing Trends)

- Europe Market Forecasts (Units, Dollars and Pricing Trends)

- Asia Market Forecasts (Units, Dollars and Pricing Trends)

- Competitive Environment

Scope of the report - this report encompasses the following areas:

(1) Estimates for the potential worldwide market for Smart Power Packs and Dumb Power Packs, in units and in dollars from 2005 to 2010. Geographic regions include Worldwide sales trends, along with trends for four regional segments: North America, Europe, Asia and Central & Latin America.

(2) Estimates for the potential worldwide power pack market, broken down by different chemistries, including lithium-ion (Li-ion), lithium-polymer (Li-polymer), nickel-metal hydrate (NiMH), nickel cadmium (NiCd) and fuel cells. These forecasts are given in units and in dollars for 2005 to 2010. In addition to the worldwide market, regional markets include trends for North America, Europe, Asia and Central & Latin America.

(3) Estimates for the potential worldwide power pack market, broken down by application segments. A total of eight application segments are discussed, including Camcorders, Cordless Phones, Digital Cameras, Mobile Phones, Notebook Computers, PDAs, Power Tools and Other. The Other category consists of personal audio devices, two-way radios, radio frequency identification devices and portable medical equipment. These forecasts are given in units and in dollars for the worldwide market and regional markets in North America, Europe, Asia and Central & Latin America from 2005 to 2010.

(4) A detailed competitive analysis of major players in the industry, including market share, competitor profiles, and recent developments in the industry.

Methodology

Primary and secondary research was conducted of the major battery manufacturers serving the targeted markets, along with major companies engaged in research and development of fuel cells. The research included companies in North America, Europe, Asia and Central & Latin America, with the implicit understanding that a certain portion of the batteries produced by the major manufacturers is shipped outside of their region.

The detailed methodology proceeded as follows:

1. The detailed econometric and business model focused primarily on end-use applications for the portable power pack market. The interactions among end users, service suppliers, equipment makers, regulators and others were considered when modeling each forecast segment and region.

2. Market demand/inflection points were analyzed to thoroughly understand potential threats and opportunities. Markets are inherently 'discontinuous and non-linear,' often leading to counter-intuitive but correct analytical findings. These trends are identified through year-to-year growth rates, rather than a single, compound annual growth rate applied to each year of the forecast period.

3. Pricing is a complex variable that includes recycling, environmental impacts and other factors. In this report, both cell pricing and the 'smart' electronics pricing were analyzed, as well.

4. Interviews were conducted with a select group of vendors via telephone, e-mail and in-person contacts at trade shows. During interviews, a checklist was used to make sure no point was overlooked, and detailed source notes were kept.

5. Secondary research was performed as a supplement, using non-proprietary, previously performed work by us, along with trade journals, 10K filings, previous industry studies, and so on.

6. Market forecasts were developed initially by establishing the worldwide structure of the portable power pack market. Worldwide consumption figures were identified for each application device, with unit forecasts determined by application market shares. Pricing was based on $/Wh for each type of battery chemistry and application. Dollar forecasts fell out of these two forecast segments.

7. For the regional structure, application usage rates (in percentages) were applied to each forecast segment (chemistry, architecture, and so on) to determine unit sales for those regions. Forecasts were 'validated' through discussions with major producers of batteries, industry association estimates, and other sources of 'top-level' shipment data.
