Emerging Markets in Digital Power Electronics: Component, Converter and System Level Opportunities, First Edition
Darnell Group, March 2005, Pages: 133
Based on extensive primary research including a comprehensive survey of trends in power management, this First Edition report on Emerging Markets in Digital Power Electronics: Component, Converter and System-Level Opportunities is a unique and valuable analysis of this evolving market area.
The migration of digital power management technologies into power conversion is being called 'disruptive,' akin to the shift from linear to switch-mode power supply design. Dramatic shifts in technology such as this are often accompanied by changes in industry leadership. Today's leading suppliers cannot ignore their sizable sales base of existing non-digital products. But emerging competitors are not limited in the same way and may be able to establish early leadership positions in the new technology. This report quantifies the anticipated adoption of digital techniques by both power converter makers and OEM system designers.
This comprehensive report begins with a review of the current competitive environment including a review of competitors, partnerships and digital products. It includes company profiles for 7 power converter companies and 21 semiconductor makers currently pursuing digital products as well as a review of several major system manufacturers incorporating digital power management techniques.
To determine whether digital power electronics will become a significant market opportunity in the next five years, a detailed survey was administered to semiconductor makers, power supply makers and system original equipment manufacturers. The resulting sample provides a statistical confidence of 95-99%. Finally, the results of the survey as well as numerous interviews with industry leaders are combined to produce a five-year forecast of the potential for adoption of digital power management technologies. The resulting forecasts are presented for conservative, moderate and aggressive adoption scenarios. Even the conservative scenario finds a potential opportunity for several hundred million devices within five years.
Definition
The market for power electronics can be segmented in a number of ways: by application area, by wattage, by captive versus merchant production, by standard versus custom designs, and so on. Business and manufacturing shifts have brought costs down so that digital technologies are migrating into power conversion. The use of digital management and control is likely to be driven by specific system needs, and these many not apply across the board. This study determines and defines the changing market opportunities for ac-dc power supplies and dc-dc converters as a result of trends in digital power management, projected between 2005 and 2010. This study focuses specifically on the merchant segment of the market. In addition to looking at the technological aspects of this market, the report determines desired product features including time to market, power system design, importance of adjustability by feature, features considered for use in power converter or converter systems, communications bus usage, and system design features.
Topics Covered include:
- Digital Power Management: Business and Technology Drivers
- Major Suppliers and Developers
- Power Management Survey Results
- Worldwide Market Forecasts - Written Comments to Trends In Power Management Survey
Scope
This research report identifies market opportunities and develops market penetration strategies for ac/dc power supplies and dc/dc converters for the following digital power management market segments: Communications, Data Communications, Computer, Industrial, Medical, Military/Aerospace and Portable. In addition, the market is analyzed by Power Converter type, including; External AC-DC (battery chargers and adapters), AC-DC Front Ends, ACDC Rectifiers, Telecom DC-DC Converters, Isolated DC-DC Converters (bricks and bus converters), and Non-isolated DC-DC Converters (point-of-load modules, VRMs, and VRDs). The report includes:
(1) Five-year worldwide unit forecasts covering the period 2005 to 2010 for ac/dc power supplies and dc/dc converters, specifically for those units employed in digital power management. Also included are worldwide unit forecasts for digital controller ICs, converter ICs and system-level ICs.
(2) Identification of the key characteristics of each market segment.
(3) Determination of market entry requirements, including product design and system features; anticipated unit sales growth rates; market trends, including standards and communications bus issues; existing applications for digital control in power conversion and power management; demand for adjustability by feature; and the importance of system design features.
(4) An analysis of the major suppliers and developers for digital power management products, including current partnerships and initiatives.
In addition, this research program covers the following general areas:
(1) Estimates of what will affect the Worldwide adoption of digital power management, including the perceived need for digital control in power converter systems.
(2) Determination of the needs of system makers for digital power control and the factors critical to successfully meeting these needs.
(3) An overview of the strategies being used by component makers, power conversion makers and system makers to bring products to this emerging market.
Methodology
Primary and secondary research were conducted of major system makers; the users/specifiers of power converters; producers of advanced-technology ICs serving the targeted markets; and the major makers of dc-dc converters and ac-dc front ends. The majority of data were obtained as a result of primary research and interviews. Background information was obtained through secondary research.
The detailed methodology proceeded as follows:
(1) A questionnaire was jointly developed by us and the 'sponsors' of the Digital Power Management study. We sent this questionnaire to 'qualified' respondents, including OEM system engineers and engineering managers and also posted it on our website. The questionnaire was also distributed to all attendees at the 'Digital Power Forum,' held in September, 2004.
(2) After the initial responses were received, follow-up telephone interviews were conducted with individuals determined to be knowledgeable about digital power management. Those interviewed were selected from both respondents to the questionnaire and non-respondents. The statistics obtained as a result of the initial questionnaire were used as a guideline for the telephone interviews. A preliminary statistical report of questionnaire responses was used to determine if any 'course corrections' were needed for the phone interviews. As a result of that preliminary analysis, several questions were slightly re-worded to obtain higher-quality information from respondents. During the phone interviews, a check list was used to make sure that no points were overlooked.
(3) Secondary research was performed as a supplement, using non-proprietary, previously performed work by us, trade journals and conference proceedings, and previous industry studies.
