Mobile telecoms has been one of the few successes of post-invasion Iraq. From a zero start the market has grown rapidly, partly due to the lack of fixed-line telecoms services. The first permanent mobile licences were awarded in August 2007, replacing three temporary licences awarded in late 2003 and extended several times. WLL licences have also been awarded. Internet access, highly restricted prior to the war, has grown quickly due to the availability of satellite broadband access and the opening of Internet cafes.
