This report provides an array of data for understanding the factors that contribute to the health and future of the U.S. inbound travel market. It compares the U.S. market with its competitors around the world and segments each individual market to understand trends over the last six years.

Specific insights include:

- Long visa wait times—from 184 days in India to 34 days in Brazil—contribute to the negative opinion held of the U.S. by others.
- The U.S. is the sixth in spending for marketing and tourism at $6.1 million. Greece is the highest, spending $141.8 million.
- The U.S. is losing to its competition in attracting visitors—France and Spain rank higher than the U.S. in inbound tourism.
- The continued weakness of the U.S. dollar against major foreign currencies is helping drive tourism to the U.S., especially since shopping is considered the primary leisure activity favored by tourists.
- Inbound tourism into the U.S. is increasing, but slowly—in 2006, it welcomed 50.9 million visitors; its lowest traffic levels were 41.2 million in 2003.
- The leading markets for incoming visitors that arrive in the U.S. are both border countries: Canada and Mexico; they are followed by the UK, Japan and Germany.
- Online tourist booking is the way of the future and, through industry consolidation and competition, will be further streamlined to provide tourists with every resource they need to book U.S. travel.

This report offers recommendations for growing inbound tourism through interviews with major players in the industry and recommendations made by the private sector and discusses their validity and compares them with similar efforts by other countries.

This report does not relate specifically to business travelers or trips taken for professional reasons. However, business travelers are included in the market size figures of this report and generally throughout the rest of this report. To the extent that these travelers relate to and impact the inbound tourism business, they are discussed in this report.
