This book will provide an introduction to neuroendocrinology from a zoological and evolutionary perspective. It will cover the evolution, development and description of the neuroendocrine system throughout the animal kingdom. Written as four parts, the book will begin with the evolution of early neuroendocrine systems in primitive animals, following the elaboration of these systems by genetic and environmental forces leading to the development of new neuroendocrine processes as new species evolve. This will be followed in the second part by how neurohormones, and their receptors and proteins are isolated, structurally characterised and modified. In the third part of the book, the physiology of the neuroendocrine circuits regulating metabolism, biorhythms, defence, and reproduction, across the animal kingdom will be examined. The actions of environmental agents in the form of nutrients, toxins acting as neuroendocrine mimics would be explored in the fourth section. Within each of these sections will be a number of short (200-400 words) topics on unusual aspects of neuroendocrinology, complementary to the text, written by leaders in the various fields of neuroendocrinology.
