Although the broadband Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) market is in the process of transitioning from being heavily dominated by modems toward a heavier focus on gateways, this process is not occurring overnight. Service providers are behind this transition to enable back-end managed home networks and opportunities for additional revenue. A major increase in worldwide broadband subscribers, not to mention the hot popularity of wireless- and VoIP-enabled equipment, is resulting in a healthy CPE growth this year that is on track to approach 20%. Many consumers are attempting to save on their traditional phone bill by trying out several flavors of VoIP that are available today. With this interest, the market for VoIP-enabled CPE has benefited, and will continue to benefit.

This report found the following:

- Many consumers are attempting to save on their phone bill by trying out several flavors of VoIP, which is boosting the market for VoIP-enabled CPE.

- The move from two-box solutions, such as modem/router combinations, to one-box residential gateway deployments for home networks means fewer boxes sold.

- This two-for-one box transition, however, will impact total broadband CPE unit growth over the next 5 years.

This report includes discussions of trends, worldwide vendor market shares (modems, gateways, SOHO routers), and provides five-year forecasts of residential gateways, modems, and routers in units and revenues. Cable and DSL CPE modems and gateways are also forecasted by region. Forecasts for gateways are broken out by access type. Also included are forecasts for cable CPE with E-MTA, VoIP-enabled DSL CPE and routers, and DOCSIS standard migration. Market shares for modems (DSL and Cable), gateways and routers are included as well.
