Japan - Mobile Market - Overview & Statistics
Paul Budde Communication Pty Ltd., May 2009, Pages: 25
Entering 2009 there were over 105 million mobile subscribers in Japan. Though the 2G mobile telephone sector in Japan has entered a maturing market phase, the overall Japanese mobile market remains in a dynamic period of activity, especially given the evident popularity of 3G services. NTT DoCoMo offered the world’s first 3G mobile phone service in late 2001, but KDDI soon became a dominant force. Nevertheless, NTT’s FOMA service began making impressive strides in 2004 and into 2005. Vodafone K.K. (formerly J-Phone), the third player in the Japanese 3G market, was struggling to attract subscribers and was acquired by Softbank early in 2006. With other players eager to enter the 3G market, two additional licences were awarded in November 2005. This report examines one of the world’s top mobile markets, with over 90 million 3G subscribers by the end of 2008, as well as plans for 4G. There is an overview of the Japanese mobile technologies including Personal Digital Cellular, Code Division Multiple Access, and Personal Handy Service. In addition, it provides an update on mobile data and content services together with relevant statistics.
