The DSM-IV-TR books already on the market provide full information on the diagnostic criteria (presenting symptoms, behavioural patterns etc) that need to be met in order to confirm a diagnosis for a psychiatric disorder. Their limitation is that none of them provide any information on the clinical management and treatment of the disorder once diagnosed.  The reader has to resort to other sources for treatment information either huge specialty-defining tomes (such as Psychiatry 2e) necessitating searching through dozens of pages to find treatment advice, or subspecialty texts which often do not address important clinical management issues such as drug interactions, adverse events, co-morbidity problems etc. First and Tasman: A Clinical Guide to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Disorders will combine the DSM diagnostic criteria with clear, detailed information on treatment options, listing all drugs available for the disorder and giving full clinical management advice. Each disorder will be discussed under the headings of Diagnosis / Differential Diagnosis (assessment issues, laboratory tests or procedures, gender ratio, prevalence, familial pattern, giving diagnostic decision trees where relevant.) and Treatment (listing all therapeutic options, giving practical advice for patient management, summarising treatment specifics with tables and treatment flowcharts). This will make First and Tasman: A Clinical Guide to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Disorders the first point of reference for any clinician or mental health practitioner needing expert advice on therapeutic options for any psychiatric disorder.
