The Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) in India have shown an impressive growth from FY04 to the mid of FY09. Total deposits, advances and net profit grew at CAGR of 19.6%, 27.4% and 20.2% respectively from FY03 to FY08. Banking sector recorded credit growth of 33.3% in FY05 which was highest in last 2 and half decades and credit growth in excess of 30% for three consecutive years from FY04 to FY07, which is best in the banking industry so far. Increase in economic activity and robust primary and secondary markets during this period have helped the banks to garner larger increase in their fee based incomes. A significant improvement in recovering the NPAs, lowest ever increase in new NPAs combined with a sharp increase in gross advances for SCBs translated into the best asset quality ratios for banking sector in last two decades.

The ill effects of the collapse of the global financial system in second half of FY09 coupled with the subsequent slowdown in the domestic markets had its shadows cast on the Indian banking sector with a moderation in its growth rates. The report seeks to unwind the answers to the questions such as: How much impact will the slowdown have on the deposit and advances growth rates? What will be the rate of growth in credit offtake and deposits in the next two years? Which is the sector that will drive credit growth in future? Which banking group is likely to garner higher share in deposits and advances? Will banks be able to maintain their margins? To what extent will the asset quality deteriorate? What are the likely slippages for various asset classes? Is consolidation imminent for the Indian Banking sector?

With extensive data coverage ranging from FY2000 to FY2009 for the entire sector further split up into various banking groups as well, the report includes brief result analysis of FY09 results of the banking companies. The report highlighting the possible emerging scenarios in the Indian banking sector will not only help decision makers from the banking sector but will also act as a useful guide to financial institutions, investment agencies, regulators & policy framers, research & academic institutions, other national & international agencies etc. Additionally, the monthly updates (for the period June 2009 to May 2010) accompanying the subscription of the said report would form a potent tool for the subscribers to keep abreast of the happenings in the industry.
