1394 2006: Will Vista and HANA Support Provide a Boost?
In-Stat/MDR, June 2006, Pages: 43
IEEE 1394 (1394), also called FireWire or i.Link, is a high-speed serial bus specification found primarily in four markets: PCs, PC peripherals, Consumer Electronics (CE), and Automotive. It consists of two standards: 1394a, the incumbent technology which provides for 400Mbps transfer speeds, and 1394b, its high-speed successor. 1394a has maintained its popularity in the PC world in 2005, with integration into most notebook PCs, as well as many consumer desktops, but in very few corporate desktops. In the PC peripheral world, 1394a is being usurped by high-speed USB in most applications, while digital televisions, DVD recorders, and cable set top boxes are among the CE applications adopting it. 1394b has received a few pieces of good news over the last year. Microsoft has announced support for 1394b in its Vista operating system. Meanwhile, the Home Audio-Video Networking Alliance (HANA) has announced that it is supporting 1394b as a home networking standard to support the transport of multiple high-definition video streams. This report contains analysis and five-year forecasts for all 1394-enabled products, breaking out each PC, PC Peripheral, CE, and Automotive application by penetration of 1394a and 1394b for each forecast year. Analysis is provided for all types of 1394, including 1394c and 1394 over Coax. Responses on 1394 from our annual Residential Technology Survey are also included, as well as brief profiles of major 1394 silicon and IP supplier.
