With each passing year, communication systems become more prevalent in our world. There is no question that people are much more connected than ever before. Whether for business or personal use, immediate access to information and communication resources has become a part of day-to-day life for many people. Mobile phones have become an integral part of this trend perhaps more than any other technology.

Authored by Nick Chandler and Stephan S. Jones Ph.D., The Basics of Cellular is designed to provide an overview of the essential elements of cellular networks, from mobile phones to antennas to protocols in use in these systems today. Cellular networking topics are, admittedly, not always easy to understand, but the reader will gain insight into the theory and implementation of this increasingly popular means of communication. Because many of these issues also arise in other wireless systems, much of the material could also be applied in whole or in part to technologies such as wireless local area networks (WLANs). The Basics of Cellular balances theories and current applications, all while examining in depth such topics of interest as traffic engineering and security, modulation techniques, antenna performance, and cell coverage and connections.

About The Authors:

Nick Chandler is a Technical Support Engineer at ADTRAN, where he has supported an array of enterprise voice and data network products. Most recently, he has worked with the company's VoIP PBX product line, as well as LAN switches. His current areas of research include network security, wireless applications, and packet-voice media and control protocols. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications and a Master of Science degree in Information & Communication Sciences from Ball State University.

Stephan S. Jones, Ph.D., is a Professor at the Center for Information and Communication Sciences at Ball State University's Center for Information and Communication Sciences and is an IEEE Senior Member. Prior to coming to higher education, he was the owner and applications engineer for one of the country's largest interconnect companies providing telecommunication solutions to commercial clients. He has implemented local- and wide-area voice and data networks as well as designing distance-learning communities for higher education applications. He holds undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Engineering Technology. His Master's and Doctoral studies were done with cognate areas in Technology Education. His current research interests are in wireless application technologies, competitive broadband access technologies, secondary and tertiary market access to broadband services, and qualitative research applied to technical environments.

Testimonials:

This text presents a comprehensive description of the fundamentals of cellular communications perfect for anyone interested in mobile wireless networking.'
Alan Johnson, Technical Engineer, ADTRAN

'Americans are increasingly transitioning from a fixed phone line to a mobile cellular environment. In this time of communications shift, this book is a perfect solution as a sourcebook for the individual searching for a thorough understanding of the technologies of cellular networking.'
John Werner, RF Engineer, OIMACTTA, Columbus, Ohio

'This is a great book for those exploring wireless technology, and it can be an excellent reference guide for individuals working in an industry impacted by wireless technology. Working for a vendor to wireless carriers, I see this book as a valuable tool for those working with the customer on a daily basis, not only for providing the basics of the technology, but also for illustrating the greater technical concerns of their customers.'
Molly Falls, Program Manager of VoIP, Intrado Inc.

'The Basics of Cellular provides a short, but thorough, explanation of the key elements of cellular network architecture. Written in a concise, yet conversational, style, the book fills an important niche between cursory treatments and complex engineering textbooks. The book will appeal to technicians and non-technicians alike, and will be a great asset to students of telecommunications, industry personnel, and policymakers.'
Joel Fishkin, Assistant Director of Telecommunications, Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission

'I like the no-nonsense, basic approach to this book; it covers the basics and then some. This easy-to-understand and thorough read is necessary for today's telecommunication student. Covering the span between the Communications Act of 1934 to spread spectrum technology, it is embedded with enough detailed technology to provide a ready-reference for cellular communication.'
Phillip Coleman, Assistant Professor, Computer Information Systems, Western Kentucky University
