This Market Report analyses the UK builders' merchants market, through which supplies are distributed to the construction industry. Builders' merchants supply a vast range of materials, components and consumables, and some companies also offer tool-hire services. The conventional way of classifying the builders' merchants market is into the following three categories:

- heavyside materials
- lightside materials
- tools and tool hire

Builders' merchants are primarily geared to serve the needs of building contractors, plumbers and similar trades people, although many also serve DIY customers.

Heavyside Materials:
As the name suggests, heavyside products and materials cover aggregates and similar basic materials, as well as larger components such as roofing tiles, windows and doors. Major heavyside materials include:

- bricks
- cement
- concrete building blocks
- drainage pipes
- gravel
- insulation
- lintels
- plaster
- plasterboard
- rafters
- reinforcing steel bars
- roofing tiles
- sand
- sawn and planed timber
- staircases
- windows and doors

Lightside Materials:
Inevitably, the distinction between lightside and heavyside materials can be arbitrary but, broadly speaking, lightside products cover internal fittings and materials, which include the following:

- adhesives
- bathroom equipment
- electrical wiring accessories
- floor and wall tiles
- heating and plumbing equipment
- ironmongery
- kitchen units and accessories
- nails and other fixings
- paints and other decorating materials
- sanitaryware
- screws

Tools and Tool Hire:
The supply of tools for purchase and hire is an important part of builders' merchants' activities and is sometimes operated from specialist centres. It covers a specific range of products including:

- compressors
- generators
- hand tools
- power tools
- pumps
