The UK ready meals market has achieved strong growth in sales since the late 1990s. Since 1997, the market rose by 26.7% in value, to reach £1.71bn by 2001. This rise has been ahead of growth in the food market as a whole, as consumers have actively sought more convenient meal solutions and been willing to pay a premium for this.

The market can be segmented into two sectors: chilled and frozen ready meals. The former has been driving sales in recent years as spending on fresh prepared foods has boomed. Frozen ready meals have also achieved growth after a period of stagnation. Suppliers have been pro-active in building their brands and investing in boosting the profile of the in-store freezer section.

The trend towards purchasing more easily-prepared meal solutions has been a major driver in this market. Growing levels of consumer disposable income have enabled shoppers to pay for reduced cooking and preparation times at home. Spending levels have also been boosted by better segmentation of the market. For example, the cookery and travel media encourage consumers to be more sophisticated in their food knowledge and choices. This has been noted by suppliers, which now offer a wider range of cuisines, not only on the basis of country, but also by region. Other areas which have been targeted include healthy eating and organic foods. In addition, children's products is a segment marked for development.

Sales of ready meals have also been encouraged by demographic changes in the UK population. The growth in single- and two-person households, as well as staggered eating occasions in larger households, has boosted solo- and dual-eating occasions for which ready meals are well suited. However, the family market is now also being developed with larger serving portions. Suppliers are looking to challenge not only cooking from scratch but also takeaway and restaurant sales, through the introduction of more `mix and match' meal components and premium-quality food.

Current trends favour further growth in the ready meals market. The erosion of cooking skills among the population, as well as the establishment of `time poor, money rich' consumers will continue to drive sales.
